1. Fully Funded PhD Programs in The Hidden Voices of Early Modern Books in Chetham’s Library: Names, Authority Files, and Cataloguing Practices

Summary of PhD Project

This project considers how to uncover and bring to attention the contributions of people from marginalised groups to early modern books (c.1450-1750). It examines how and why professional cataloguing practices contribute to keeping these groups’ contributions hidden, and what might be done to rectify this. It will focus on the challenges of recording the names of people from marginalised groups in catalogue records and on the role of authority files in making their contributions visible. It will also explore the benefits and limitations of different cataloguing standards and of library records as Linked Open Data, specifically in the context of small and medium heritage organisations.

2. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Joint Modeling of Longitudinal and Time-to-Event Data

Summary of PhD Project

Joint modeling of longitudinal and time-to-event outcomes is a statistical approach that simultaneously analyzes the relationship between a longitudinal outcome (such as repeated measurements over time) and a time-to-event outcome (like survival time or time to a specific event). The key idea is to account for the correlation between the two outcomes, as the longitudinal data can provide valuable information about the timing and risk of the event. For example, in a clinical study of patients with diabetes, the longitudinal outcome could be the progression of HbA1c levels (a marker of blood sugar control), and the time-to-event outcome could be the time until the patient develops diabetic complications (e.g., kidney failure).

3. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Evaluating End of Life Strategies for Non Woven Industrial Filtration Felts

Summary of PhD Project

This PhD research seeks to redress this imbalance by developing scientific strategies for the regeneration, selective disassembly, and material recovery of both mono-material and blended fibre felts. The project will explore depolymerisation using enzymatic and solvent-based approaches, assess mechanical and filtration performance post-regeneration, and quantify environmental trade-offs using ISO 14040/44-compliant lifecycle assessment frameworks. Guided by the principles of cradle-to-cradle design, disassemblable product architecture, and closed-loop polymer flows, the research will provide scalable insights applicable to energy-from-waste, metals refining, and other filtration-intensive sectors where disposal remains unsustainable.

4. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Coupling Carbon Capture to Anodic Electrochemical Synthesis

Summary of PhD Project

To date, most approaches have focused on cathodic CO2 reduction (CO2R), to produce a range of carbon products from CO to propanol, while the coupled anode reaction has been neglected. Anodic water oxidation to oxygen is used as a simple and convenient reaction to balance the cathodic charge. The thermodynamics of water oxidation require a minimum potential of 1.23 V vs RHE, this limits the system energy efficiency while forming product of little to no value. Water oxidation at the anode will be replaced with ethylene oxidation to ethylene oxide (EO)- the 12th highest-volume organic chemical, serving as a versatile intermediate that can be transformed into value added chemicals such as ethylene glycol, ethanolamines and epoxy resins.

7. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Feminist Global Politics in the Age of Backlash

Summary of PhD Project

As more states launch FFPs, there is potential to reshape global agendas for equality. While FFPs have signalled a normative shift in the discourses about foreign policy terrain, they have sometimes been criticised for not moving the needle enough to achieve systemic change. Perhaps more significantly, FFP countries and others that increasingly privilege feminism in their approach to international politics are increasingly at the mercy of anti-feminist and anti-gender campaigns. These campaigns push back against changing power dynamics locally and globally, and manifest in different domains from the intimate to the geopolitical.

11. Fully Funded PhD Programs in (UoM – Tsinghua) Towards the 3-D Structure of Magnetic Fields in Dense Clouds

Summary of PhD Project

One of the most poorly understood aspects of star formation is the role which magnetics fields play in the process. In major part this is a consequence of the difficulty in measuring the field strength and constraining the topology of the field. This project will use observations of the Zeeman effect (from the FAST telescope in China) and dust polarisation observations (from the JCMT in Hawaii), together with state of the art magneto-hydrodynamic simulations, to constrain the full 3-D structure of the magnetic field in star forming clouds.
