1. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Autonomous Robotics: Multi-collaborative scouting and mapping

Summary of PhD Project

Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) is an essential enabling technology for the Net Zero transition in the UK’s energy sector. However, significant technological and cultural barriers are limiting its effectiveness. Overcoming these barriers is a key target of this CDT. The focus of the CDT’s research projects will be how RAS can be used for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of new infrastructure in renewables (wind, solar, geothermal, tidal, hydrogen) and nuclear (fission and fusion), and to support the decarbonization of existing maintenance and decommissioning of assets.

3. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Effects of thermal warpage on supersonic intake and combustion

Summary of PhD Project

The objective of the research is to understand the effects of structural warpage due to heating on the aerodynamic performance of supersonic intakes and then the coupled effect on supersonic combustion. This data can then help support future design efforts, which requires validation data where the effects of thermal warpage can be included.

5. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Deformation and fracture of TRISO fuel particles

Summary of PhD Project

The proposed PhD project will focus on an Advanced Reactor fuel form called TRi-structural ISOtropic (TRISO) fuel. Each TRISO particle has a spherical uranium-based kernel (although this project only studies particles with surrogate kernels of Alumina or Zirconia) that is surrounded by four coating layers made of pyrolytic carbon and silicon carbide (SiC). These coatings work together to prevent the release of radioactive fission products from the kernel. This PhD project will be performed under the direct supervision of Prof. Dong (Lilly) Liu and Prof. Emilio Martinez-Paneda of Oxford University and co-supervised by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories.
