3. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Photocatalysis
Summary of PhD Project
This PhD project focuses on developing a sustainable and decentralized method for converting atmospheric nitrogen and waste nitrates into ammonium nitrate using electricity and light in water at neutral pH. The research combines plasmonic and semiconductor-based photoelectrocatalysis to create a novel dual-catalyst system capable of producing fertilizer locally and under mild conditions. By addressing key challenges in nitrogen activation – such as high energy requirements and low selectivity – the project aims to establish a scalable, energy-efficient, and environmentally responsible alternative to the Haber-Bosch process, supporting the transition to sustainable agriculture and localized fertilizer production.

4. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Data-Driven Cell Biology Focusing on Live-Cell Imaging
Summary of PhD Project
In the TIMED project, we will pioneer new approaches to study cancer and its dynamics by integrating artificial intelligence and temporal data analysis. By studying dynamic biological processes, namely cell behaviour and response to perturbations over time, we will not only gain insights into this critical yet overlooked dimension of cell response, but also generate a significant amount of novel data for the public domain, enabling us to systematically characterise fundamental cellular processes at an unprecedented scale.

6. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Distributed Continual Machine Learning
Summary of PhD Project
Machine learning methods typically can only solve the tasks that they have been specifically trained to solve. They first adapt (train) a mathematical model on a number of examples and then apply the trained model. However, when trained models are faced with new situations, their performance drops significantly. In other words, these systems may not generalize well: they perform poorly in scenarios that are related to but different from those they were trained on. This poses a major obstacle to the effective and reliable use of machine learning in practical applications.

7. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Real Time Simulation
Summary of PhD Project
The main idea of this project is to use dynamic simulation to investigate the impact on the power grid caused by Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) – such as Electric Vehicles, and suggest control techniques to minimise the problems, which can be verified and validated by using real time simulation/control in the loop simulation. The simulation seeks to reproduce the user’s consumption profile, stipulating an analysis of the results considering a massive insertion of electric vehicles in the electrical grid (at medium and low voltage levels).

8. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry
Summary of PhD Project
In the project, you will investigate the release of drugs from formulations containing the active substance (peptide, protein and oligonucleotide) in complexes with oppositely charged polyelectrolytes in the form of dense complex phases, liquid “coacervates” or suspensions of particles. The goal is to reach an in-depth understanding of how drugs are released from liquid coacervates and particles after subcutaneous administration, and how they are transported through the extracellular matrix in the adipose tissue to be finally absorbed into the bloodstream.

9. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry
Summary of PhD Project
The research group Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry aims to clarify the connections between the structure of drug molecules, their physico-chemical properties and the possibilities of controlling how they are stored in and released from different types of particulate drug carriers and formulations. The aim is to create new knowledge that makes it possible to develop new or improved systems for drug administration, and to develop in vitro methods for modelling what happens to drug products after administration, including macromolecular drugs such as peptides and proteins and small molecular drugs such as cancer drugs.

10. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Biochemistry
Summary of PhD Project
IDPro is an exceptional network of nine beneficiaries (eight academic and one industrial) and five partner organizations (four industrial and three academic) from seven different countries, with excellent track records in protein research and supervision. Together, we will train eleven doctoral candidates, with distinct competencies of relevance for the field of intrinsically disordered proteins, to secure future scientific breakthroughs in a rapidly developing field. In particular, we will investigate how disordered proteins interact, how interaction is affected by disease-related mutations, and assess how disordered proteins cause aberrant cellular signaling in relevant human disease models.

11. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Battery Interphases Design
Summary of PhD Project
Rechargeable Li-ion batteries are transforming our energy landscape, powering everything from portable devices to electric vehicles. Their exceptional energy density, long cycle life, and flexible design have made them the gold standard in energy storage technology; however, further advancing their performance is crucial to meet future energy challenges. Deeper understanding of the fundamental processes governing battery charge and discharge is key to bringing the technology to the next level. In focus of the project is the design principles of electrode/electrolyte interfaces and interphases.

12. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Economic History
Summary of PhD Project
While reuse and recycling have always been part of human practice, post-war consumerism led to an unprecedented increase in the volume of waste and made Sweden one of the leading per capita waste producers in Europe in the 1970s. Parallel to the growth of waste was the awakening of modern environmentalism and 30 years later, Sweden had transformed its economy to become a technological leader in advanced recycling services, not only for household waste, but also for complex industrial waste, such as the recycling of automobiles and household appliances. In today’s large-scale transitions in the automotive industry, a deeper understanding of adaptability, flexibility, as well as inertia and inactivity, is central, especially in relation to complex and hazardous materialities such as battery cell production.

13. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Computing Science focusing on the topic of Parametric Floating-Point Reasoning
Summary of PhD Project
The project focuses on automated reasoning about floating-point numbers whose bit size is unknown and given as a symbolic parameter. Reasoning about floating-point numbers of symbolic size allows one to overcome fundamental limitations of fixed-size reasoning; it is crucial to develop reusable formal models of floating-point arithmetic. The project will enable modern SMT solvers to reason about floating-point numbers of symbolic size, and will make this automation available to users of interactive proof assistants. These employ a special software architecture that renders them highly trustworthy but causes the efficient implementation of proof procedures to be more challenging.
