1. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Microbiology
Summary of PhD Project
The project aims to study fundamental molecular mechanisms of how phages interact with host bacteria during infections, particularly focusing on the use of E. coli and its related phages as model organisms. However, the results may be applied in pathogenic bacteria related to E. coli, addressing the pressing issue of global antibiotic-resistant superbugs by studying phage-bacteria interactions. This project involves molecular, physiological and systematic study of E. coli- phage interaction mechanisms, with potential mechanistic studies of phage and bacteria protein interactions.

6. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Food Microbiology
Summary of PhD Project
Vitamin B12 (B12) is naturally absent from plants which is a major constraint in the development of nutritious and sustainable plant-based diets. B12 is essential for red blood cell production, and proper nervous system and brain function. With an increasing fraction of especially the younger generation living as vegetarians or with a low intake of animal-derived foods, B12 deficiency is of increasing concern. To address this issue, we will investigate the B12 biosynthetic capabilities of various strains of food-grade bacteria such as Propionibacterium freudenreichii, Priestia megaterium and Acetobacter pasteurianus.

7. Fully Funded PhD Programs in membrane protein structure and function
Summary of PhD Project
Taste shapes our dietary choices and protects us from harmful substances, yet the molecular mechanisms behind taste perception remain poorly understood. This PhD project will investigate how recombinant taste receptors recognize ligands and undergo activation, using heterologous expression systems and in vitro characterization methods. A central challenge in studying these proteins is preserving their native environment during isolation. To address this, the project integrates the development of novel amphipathic copolymers for extracting membrane proteins into native nanodiscs – polymer-lipid assemblies that maintain native lipids and protein activity. Current copolymers are often inefficient or too harsh for mammalian targets, and this project seeks to overcome those limitations.

11. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Cardiac adipose tissue in the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation
Summary of PhD Project
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrythmia affecting more than 33.5 million people worldwide and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality occurring as a result of stroke and heart failure. An increase in body mass index is associated with a greater risk of AF and is linked to an increase in epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) which has the potential to release signaling and inflammatory molecules affecting cardiomyocytes and fibroblasts in the myocardium. However, the role of how obesity and EAT contribute to structural and electrical remodeling the atria is unknown. This project will provide novel and important insights into role of EAT and obesity in AF pathogenesis, potentially leading to development of novel treatment strategies for AF patients.

12. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Citizens’ Agenda-Setting in Democratic Systems (CASDS)
Summary of PhD Project
The puzzle at the heart of the project “Citizens’ Agenda-Setting in Democratic Systems” is this: while democratic theorists agree that ordinary citizens should be involved in agenda-setting (the crucial step in policy-making processes that determines which issues and solutions receive political attention), we lack a normative framework to understand what this abstract principle requires in terms of political practice and how it should be institutionalized. The CASDS project aims at contributing to democratic theory by developing conceptual and normative resources to think of citizens as “input-providers.”

13. Fully Funded PhD Programs in peptide discovery
Summary of PhD Project
To develop new therapies, we need to be able to find molecules that can both bind and reach disease-associated proteins inside cells. Traditional chemical structures used as drugs struggle to bind many proteins. Peptides are growing in promise as a drug modality, particularly cyclic peptides, because they excel at binding. But these peptides can struggle to reach their target proteins inside cells. For this Novo Nordisk Foundation funded PhD project, we will take inspiration from natural product cyclic peptides to discover molecules with the needed binding and cell entry abilities. We will develop experimental methods that can synthesize trillions of these molecules — a number exceeding the count of stars in our galaxy—and rapidly identify the most promising candidates.

14. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Exploring UV-Induced Elastin Damage in the Context of Skin Aging and Disease
Summary of PhD Project
Elastin is a crucial protein that provides elasticity and resilience to the skin, allowing it to stretch and return to its original shape, thus maintaining its functionality. Since elastin is not renewed to significant extent throughout life, it becomes vulnerable to cumulative damage from oxidative stress, glycation, and enzymatic breakdown. UV-induced oxidative stress contributes to pathological conditions including dermatoporosis (chronic skin fragility), which weakens skin function and protective mechanisms, and solar elastosis, marked by coarse wrinkles and thickened skin with aggregated, dysfunctional elastin. However, the exact mechanisms by which UV radiation alters elastin’s structure remain unclear. In this PhD project, we will address this knowledge gap and investigate how UV-induced oxidative stress affects mature skin elastin and its monomeric precursor, tropoelastin.

16. Fully Funded PhD Programs in video-feedback consultation in daycare
Summary of PhD Project
Daycare providers have an important role in supporting young children’s well-being, development, and learning in daycare settings. However, children present themselves with different needs which may not always be easy to interpret and meet in an adequate way. In Denmark, pedagogical psychological counselling (PPC) professionals offer consultation to daycare providers to support them in understanding child behaviour and needs, strengthening their interactional competencies, and adapting daycare settings to children´s specific needs expecting a spill-over effect on child development. However, there is a need for an evidence-based tool that is tailored to Danish daycare settings and the resources and practices of PPC professionals. The goal of the project is to create and test a video-feedback consultation program that is feasible for use by PPC professionals.

17. Fully Funded PhD Programs in biophysical neuropharmacology
Summary of PhD Project
At the Laboratory for Membrane Protein Dynamics we explore the neurotransmitter transporters, in particular the ones responsible for the termination of the serotonergic and dopaminergic signals. These transporters are the main target for antidepressants and cocaine/amphetamines, respectively. We reveal their multifaceted nature, acting as molecular motors which harvest the energy to drive substrate transport from ion gradients. These remarkable entities exhibit properties from enzymes (transport kinetics), receptors (inhibitor binding) and channels (current properties). Our research is grounded in fundamental molecular pharmacology but has for the last decade adopted a suite of cutting-edge biophysical techniques.
