The PhD will be part of the new FME GigaCCS centre. The centre will advance Norway’s expertise in CCS, as well as support the global implementation of CCS at a gigatonne scale. FME GigaCCS seeks a highly motivated candidate for a PhD research fellowship aimed at de-risking CO2 storage in (hyper)saline aquifers. The background is that solid salt is known to form during CO2 storage, potentially leading to permeability impairment and reduced injectivities. Much research have been done to understand the physics of salt precipitation, but little is known on how geological heterogeneities at various scales affect the extent of salt formation.

NHM in Oslo has large collections of fossils and rocks, and field exposures are well known and easily accessible. The PhD candidate will carry out a thorough review of the whole succession in the light of new knowledge about global and regional trends and events, including climate change, evolutionary events (radiations and extinctions), plate tectonics, and changes in geochemical cycles.
