1. Fully Funded PhD Programs
Summary of PhD Project
The project will investigate patterns of hyperactivity using electrophysiological methods, which occur with aging and lead to altered long-range and local synaptic function and subsequent aberrant network excitability along with associated memory deficits. Specifically, the candidate will investigate the underlying contribution of cell-type specific projections within hippocampal-cortical circuits in mice and characterize the synaptic changes within long-range versus local cortical circuits across aging.

2. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Self-Assembled Rolled-Up Microcoils for Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance
Summary of PhD Project
The work will be carried out in the Research Team “Magnetic Properties” within the Institute for Solid State Research, IFW Dresden. The position is funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG). We want to use self-assembled rolled-up microcoils for solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) to investigate small single crystals, exfoliated flakes from 2D van der Waals materials, or single grains from polycrystalline samples. The use of microcoils will enhance the sensitivity of NMR, and allow for orientation dependent measurements, which were not possible before in such small samples.

Summary of PhD Project
Within the Research Group DynaDeep, our subproject estimates global fluxes of groundwater through beaches. Biogeochemical processes in these ‘subterranean estuaries’ (STEs) change composition of the water and control solute flux to the coastal ocean. We develop empirical surrogate models for numerical groundwater models to estimate and extrapolate global groundwater fluxes through STEs. This provides essential base-data to other DynaDeep subprojects.

5. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Photoemission Spectroscopy on 2D materials
Summary of PhD Project
The focus is on experimental investigations of the electronic structure of atomically thin transition metal trihalides and chalcogenides. The aim of the work is to investigate how their electronic properties can be specifically influenced by doping, mechanical strain, choice of substrate or by the formation of van der Waals heterostructures. The work includes the preparation of atomically thin films and their characterization using methods such as atomic force microscopy and optical spectroscopy. The project is embedded in a planned international research training group between Prague and Dresden.

6. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Methane production by microphytobenthos and its contribution to the benthic methane flux from the coastal zone of the Baltic Sea
Summary of PhD Project
The position is part of the DFG-funded project “Methane production by microphytobenthos (MPB) and its contribution to benthic methane flux in the coastal zone of the Baltic Sea (MicroMeth).” In order to classify the significance of MPB-associated methane production, we will investigate the potential of this methane source in incubation experiments with selected diatom cultures. In order to better classify the methane production rates determined in our experiments in the benthic and atmospheric methane fluxes, we will determine the methane fluxes between the sediment, the water, and the atmosphere in selected study areas (Darß-Zings Bodden Chain and Greifswalder Bodden).

7. Fully Funded PhD Programs in The role of benthic-pelagic coupling on N2O production and emissions in shallow coastal ecosystems of the Baltic Sea
Summary of PhD Project
The PhD project will directly contribute to Work package 3 “Benthic-pelagic coupling” and its focus will be the quantification of nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes across the sediment-water-air interfaces, as well as achieving a quantitative understanding of how physical changes at the sediment-water interface affect the production of N2O. To this end, you will use state-of-the-art approaches to conduct repeated (seasonal) surveys in several coastal shallow water sites of the Baltic Sea.

9. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Analytics of Ice Nucleating Polysaccharides in the Atmosphere
Summary of PhD Project
The aim of the advertised PhD position is to investigate the influence of these polysaccharides on ice formation in clouds in detail and make it quantifiable. To this end, existing chromatographic analysis methods are to be further developed in order to improve the chemical characterization of these ice-active compounds. The optimized analysis techniques will then be applied to a selection of atmospheric aerosol, cloud and precipitation samples of both marine and terrestrial origin. Samples will be collected in at least one field campaign during the course of the PhD, with a particular focus on terrestrial environments, which are characterized by different biological source mechanisms than marine systems.

11. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Secondary Ice Production with focus on Ice Fragmentation during Graupel Formation
Summary of PhD Project
The climate effect and the ability of mixed-phase clouds to form precipitation is strongly dependent on the presence of ice crystals. Observations show that secondary ice formation processes play an important role in mixed-phase clouds. A central secondary ice formation process is ice fragmentation during the formation of graupel (rime-splintering also known as the Hallett-Mossop process). In the previous DFG project – in contrast to earlier studies – no efficient secondary ice formation was observed under near-atmospheric conditions within the parameter range investigated.
