1. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Experimental Systems Neuroscience Neural basis of survival behaviors
Summary of PhD Project
The Stagkourakis Lab at Karolinska Institutet and SciLifeLab in Stockholm is recruiting up to two PhD students in experimental systems neuroscience. We are based at the Department of Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet and are part of SciLifeLab, Sweden’s national center for large-scale biosciences and data-driven life science. Our mission is to uncover the neural and neurohormonal mechanisms underlying instinctual and homeostatic behaviors, including aggression, fear, food, and water intake.

2. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Stem cells and Brittle bone disease
Summary of PhD Project
Our research group is a leader in stem cell research and the translational development of stem cell-based medicines. We focus on improving the lives of children with congenital bone fragility, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), and have achieved groundbreaking results through clinical trials with fetal mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). Our advances in the treatment of OI have shown promising results and open doors for future medical innovations.

3. Fully Funded PhD Programs in translational toxicology
Summary of PhD Project
The research will be conducted in the group of Professor Volker Lauschke. In the group, we use 3D cell culture systems of primary human cells, microfluidics and integrative bioinformatics approaches to develop better model systems for prediction of drug toxicity and to identify novel therapeutic strategies for complex metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes. In addition, we are interested in understanding the molecular basis of hepatic plasticity in liver injury and regeneration. Furthermore, we study the genetic basis of drug response and adverse drug reactions on a population-scale.

4. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Clinical Neuroscience
Summary of PhD Project
As part of the Multimodal Brain Imaging research group at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience you will find a unique opportunity to work with top researchers in brain imaging. The group focuses on how the structure, function and neurochemistry of the human brain shape the functioning of the human mind: our consciousness, perception, decisions and actions. The group has long experience developing and evaluating novel brain imaging technologies and is closely related to the National Facility for Magnetoencephalography (NatMEG) where part of the project will take place.

5. Fully Funded PhD Programs in examining long non-coding RNA function within adipocytes
Summary of PhD Project
This doctoral project will investigate the role of lncRNA in organizing adipocyte lipid breakdown and in turn uncover a novel way to target this metabolically important function in adipocytes. The extent to which different effector proteins along the lipid breakdown pathway interact with RNA is not known, and in this project, we aim to systematically uncover all lncRNAs that bind to proteins during lipid breakdown induction.

7. Fully Funded PhD Programs in childhood cancer
Summary of PhD Project
The research project aims to advance our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying pediatric cancers and to address the critical unmet medical need of identifying novel and clinically relevant targets for future therapies. In particular, the Ph.D. student will investigate novel genes and molecular pathways involved in regulating chemotherapy response, DNA damage repair, as well as in vivo tumor growth and metastasis.
Application Deadline: 10.Aug.2025
8. Fully Funded PhD Programs in perinatal drug epidemiology
Summary of PhD Project
Many pregnant women use prescription drugs. However, because pregnant people are systematically excluded from clinical trials, there is often no or very limited information about potential risks to the fetus. The overall goal of the doctoral project is to improve knowledge about drug safety during pregnancy through large-scale, data-driven surveillance using Swedish national health registries.
